TOKYO -- Shigeru Ishiba, a frank-speaking veteran politician and former defense minister, on Friday was elected leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on his fifth try, ensuring he will become the country's next prime minister.Ishiba defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a dramatic runoff after none of the record nine candidates seeking the post won a majority in the first round of voting. His victory denied a historic outcome.
