Shigeru Ishiba to be Japan's next PM after winning LDP leadership election - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- Shigeru Ishiba, a frank-speaking veteran politician and former defense minister, on Friday was elected leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party on his fifth try, ensuring he will become the country's next prime minister.Ishiba defeated Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi in a dramatic runoff after none of the record nine candidates seeking the post won a majority in the first round of voting. His victory denied a historic outcome. Had Takaichi prevailed she would have become Japan's first female prime minister.

Nikkei 225 Futures plummeted to 37,900, down 1,950 points, or 5.1%, at the opening of the Friday night session. It then fell as much as 2,220 points, or 5.8%, to 37,630 at 4:36 p.m. Ishiba is in favor of raising rates and is open to higher capital gains taxes.
