Sumitomo U.S. unit files for bankruptcy on talc lawsuit expenses - Nikkei Asia TOKYO -- A U.S. subsidiary of Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp. that distributed cosmetics ingredients for such brands as Estee Lauder, L'Oreal and Avon has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Presperse had $59.2 million in liabilities as of March 31, Sumitomo said Tuesday. The filing comes amid mounting litigation related to claims that its talc products caused cancer.

University of Tokyo eyes 1st tuition hike in 20 years as state grants wane The University of Tokyo said Tuesday it will raise its tuition for new students who will enroll from April next year amid declining state grants, making it the first such hike in 20 years. The prestigious national university pushed ahead with the hike despite opposition from some students and faculty members, setting its annual tuition cost at 642,960 yen ($4,500), up about 107,000 yen. Asian elephant given by Myanmar dies at Japanese zoo An Asian elephant given to Fukuoka by the city of Yangon under a friendship program has died at a zoo in the Japanese city after being infected with a herpesvirus, city officials said Tuesday. The 12-year-old female elephant, one of the four that arrived in Japan from Myanmar in late July, tested positive earlier this month for elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, the officials said, adding the virus can be lethal for the giant animal.
